Along with these amazing yard sale tips I've added a few new strategies to my annual yard sale this year.  I will tell you that happily it was my best yard sale yet!  I'm not sure if people in general are becoming more money savvy or if I just have kick a$$ yard sale skills.  :)  The verdict is still out.

1.  The dollar table...  Just like everyone loves the dollar store, the "dollar table" at my yard sale was a main attraction.  I made a big sign that said...you guessed it "Dollar Table" and most everyone headed right for it.  A secondary bonus was that the dollar table spared me time with pricing.  Each designated dollar item had the same color yellow dot sticker on the bottom.

2.  Styling and display (all day long)...  Creating mini vignettes allows people to visualize items that will work in their home.  Customers are more likely to buy multiple items they see displayed nicely together.  But, my main tip is to be sure to restyle your items throughout the day as items are sold.  Don't just display items first thing in the morning and forget about them.  Nothing is worse than a yard sale that looks picked through.

3.  The boutique table... This table is solely for the customers looking for bargains on brand name merchandise.  For example, this year I sold a Coach tote bag.  As a side note, I save all receipts, tickets and original packaging (like dust bags) for higher priced items like this.  Anything that may require brand name authentification will sell for more with these items.

4.  Price to Sell...  We all know everyone who comes to a yard sale is looking for a bargain.  If items aren't selling, mark them down.  I definitely didn't want to bring stuff back into storage.  Toward the end of the day you can mark items down individually, or a simple sign that says "Make me an offer" or "All items half price"  will do!

5.  Prepare all year...  This final tip is probably the single greatest factor to my yard sale success each year...  I prepare all year through.  Crazy?  Maybe a little.  But it helps to be able to throw together a yard sale at the last moment when the weather is going to be beautiful or a local event will be driving traffic through the area.  I have a designated box in my storage area.  Throughout the year when something reaches yard sale status it gets placed in the box.  No more cluttering closets.  No more crazy searching through cabinets and closets for days before your yard sale.

Remember your trash is someone else's treasure!  Donate unsold items to your local charity!

Do you have any creative yard sale tips?  Have a great weekend!

  1. Love your dollar table idea. I hosted a garage sale a few years back and I did really well too. I think it's partially due to the fact that I don't sell anything that is total crap (like I see at so many yard and garage sales) and I keep my prices reasonable, unless I'm on the fence about selling it anyway. This year I went around to all of the sales for the annual garage sale day in my area and I couldn't believe some of the stuff people were trying to sell- no one wants used baby bottle nipples people!

  2. I love the idea of creating little vignettes! It'll help sell your stuff, PLUS it's just fun entertainment. :)
