On Tuesday I presented a poll on the question Which room design factor do you consider to be most important? The choices were architectural detail, designer fabrics, furniture, comfort and durability, materials, technology, lighting, or art.
And how did you all answer?
The most popular choice was...furniture. 35% of you voted this way! Above all when designing a space furniture was your top consideration.

My biggest surprise?
So few of you chose designer fabric. So many design boards are designed around it! I thought for sure that fabric was going to be a major consideration.

And how did I vote?

I always have a love for architectural details in a space. When remodeling my own home it was a major factor, even before I considered other design elements. Give me traditional moldings and add some modern touches and I'm in my dream home. Maybe it was growing up around the business of custom woodwork that makes me a little nostalgic. :)

Thanks for participating! Hope you all have a great weekend!

I am surprised by that result too. However, that may be the reason for so many disappointed do-it-yourself designers. People come to my home and talk about how much they love my style. They ask how I do it. I tell them it's all about an inspiration piece (fabric, art, etc) and getting the scale right. Then I visit their homes where they have just finished updating a room and they are disappointed in the outcome. They tried to recreate a look, but have focused on the wrong things. They get a certain style of furniture in their minds and fail to think about whether or not it will work well in their own space.
ReplyDeleteI want to live in that 3rd room so bad!!

I'm surprised about the fabric, too! I mean, I guess it's not a *MUST*, but DANG it makes a huge difference!!! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI guess I missed this vote. I would have picked architectural details, too. I am about to work on my bedroom, and the ceiling will be the first place I start.
ReplyDeleteInteresting results! I would've picked architectural details if I had two votes. :)
ReplyDeleteI think where a person is in their life would affect the decision too. If I didn't have a very active young family and dog I would decorate my home very differently, but I need to take into consideration comfort and durability first. But OH how fabric is a game changer - definitely one of the biggest ways to influence the feel of a room!
