{My Weekend} Estate Sale Fail and Vintage Desk Find

I had the opportunity this weekend to hit the estate sale and yard sale scene.  Some weekends are a big win.  Some are big fail.  Unfortunately my shopping excursions fell into the major fail category this time.

I actually attended an estate sale (run by an outside company) that was so poorly run...I left.  Imagine that.  Goes to show you how important it is to plan and organize prior to your sale and to hire the right company if you choose to do so.

Oh well, it's the thrill of the hunt.  :)

I did however score these adorable vintage mid century school desks.  They were originally from the local catholic school that has since purchased new ones.  My neighbor had obtained them and was going to throw them away.  I'll be giving them a makeover for my two sweet little nieces.  Have I mentioned my two little nieces yet?  I love them so!  They are just over a year apart so my older niece is just slightly bigger than my younger niece.  Just like the desks!  Too perfect.

I have plans for these that I'll will be posting.  But, I'm interested to get your creative opinions first!

What would you do with these vintage desks?  Give them a good clean and leave them with their "vintage charm?"  Spray paint them?  Maybe add some modern touches?  Or anything else you can dream up.  Would love to hear!

  1. Cute score Jean! I had a fail weekend the other weekend as well. Oh well, I guess that means hopefully the next time it's a big hit, right? I love those vintage desks just the way they are but with a good cleaning. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

  2. Hmmmm... Those desks are really cute. I think I would give them a good scrub and and then decide. It is a shame to paint over the vintage loveliness if it is actually lovely. I think a scrub will tell you whether or not to paint.

  3. I would just clean them up and leave them as they are. That blue is fantastic!

  4. Good score! I love the blue and I'd just try to clean them up as good as you can. If the tops still look dirty, consider wrapping a patterned oil cloth around them. I think that would look fantastic and it could be wiped as well.

  5. Great find, they are so sweet! I like the idea of cleaning them up and leaving the wood and paint as is, but I bet whatever you decide to do will be beautiful!

  7. I love that banged up turquoise patina!!! I would have LOVED one of those in my room when I was a kid - so fun for playing school or doing homework.

  8. A simple zap of spray paint on the metal, and yes, chalkboard paint the desktop, please, in a fun color
