Carrara Marble Bedside Table


I've been looking for a small space solution for a bedside table for my master bedroom.  I had about 22" of space to work with alongside my bed.  I saw this from Ballard Designs and thought it would be a great option, but for a sale price of $129.99 I knew I could come up with a better priced alternative.

This is my master bedroom bedside table solution...





My easy and inexpensive bedside table started as a yard sale find for $8.00.

The finish was terrible, but it was sturdy, the perfect size and it had a shape very similar to the Ballard Designs table.

The first thing I did was turn the table upside down and unscrewed the top from the base.

I used 100 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the table so that the paint would adhere better.  No need to remove all of the finish.





Then I primed using Zinsser primer and a foam brush.


Aaahh, I was feeling better already.
Finally, I applied a coat of Benjamin Moore White.  Once it dried, I decided I wanted a slightly softer look.  I custom mixed my own color by adding a touch of Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter to the Benjamin Moore White until I liked the color and added a second coat.

Tip: If you are going to custom mix your own color for any project, make sure to mix enough to complete the project because it will be impossible to match.



I went to a local tile and granite supplier and had them cut me a 20" round carrara marble table top.  Remember how I removed the old damaged table top?  I just replaced it with the new marble top.  The weight of the marble was enough to hold it in place.  This is a very easy and generally inexpensive way to change the look of a piece of furniture.  My cost for the new table top $25.

Tip:  Have a supplier check their remnant pieces.  You can find amazing pieces of marble and granite at a fraction of the cost.

I'm so happy with how it looks and I'm even happier with the price!

  4. Hopping over from SNS. Great idea to buy a remnant piece of marble! I can't believe it was only $25 with the edging detail. I will have to keep that in mind for a future project. We have Carrara on our kitchen counters, and I am in love with it.

I honestly would have never thought to have the marble cut for a table top nor did I know it could be so inexpensive. Your table is 10 times better than the Ballard Design one.
